Power Pxxx November 2016

130 St Georges Bay Road, Parnell - Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design End of Year Two Exhibition, November 1st 2016.

This series explores the relationship between society’s emphasis on beauty and how obese women are seen in erotica and sex, in an unnatural view.

My work explores the relationship between ‘fat porn’ and its confrontational aspect to the feminist beauty regime. With influences of Jenny Saville, Lucian Freud, and Celia Hempton, these paintings are a reflection of my fascination with the female form; structured to entice the viewer into a mirror of societies attitudes towards those of a larger body type. I want to highlight the impurities of the body but also the beauty within the imperfection.

It is not just the image that is being powerful but also the materials used. The strength of these works shows the movement of the body and the power that comes from transferring energy from artist to artwork. The strokes and paint application vary in style between the paintings, and as I worked became more stylised, reflecting societies increasing outlook on the overweight population.

Each painting has had a time limit of two days only, and within that only two layers.

The sameness of the works is intentional – together they create one large painting with a clear set of rules (colour and time). The original images were retrieved from erotica sites, and the women's identities are unknown.
